Hearts of the Hollow, a musical inspired by Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Background – How This Story Came About
The idea for writing this musical came to me while watching Jonathan Kruk’s performance of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at the Old Dutch Church (Sleepy Hollow, NY) at the 5 pm performance on October 8, 2011. I thought he did a lovely job, and the production stirred my muse. As Mr. Kruck recounted the tale, I started making up my own version of the story. I imagined Ichabod whacking the school children on the knuckles with a birch whip. I could hear pupils singing a song identifying Ichabod Crane as a quasi Cotton Mather – a Puritan, who adheres to the doctrines of theocracy. I felt the Horseman’s restless spirit galloping about the graveyard grounds surrounding the Old Dutch Church. And I pretended Katrina told Brom to go “stuff it”. I heard someone from the audience say, “Isn’t he wonderful?” And Mr. Kruk was indeed engaging and entertaining, yet I couldn’t help but think. Why not turn this into an awesome musical? So, I did.
